Apologies for the disruption in scheduled programming. We interrupt this pandemic to bring you awards season! Nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, kicking off this year’s delayed season. The Globes will still be the first major televised event of the year, taking place on February 28, over a month later than usual. The first twelve nominees were announced by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson live on the Today show and the remaining categories were revealed across E! Online digital news channels. David Fincher’s Mank leads the film nominations while The Crown dominates the television categories. Both have six nominations, adding to Netflix’s total of 42. The list is full of bright spots, like the three women up for best director, Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), Regina King (One Night in Miami), and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and another Schitt’s Creek sweep.

The event will be hosted by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the fourth time. Fey will host from the Rainbow Room in Manhattan and Poehler will be live from COVID-19 epicenter Los Angeles, CA, marking the first time the Globes will be bi-coastal. After a tumultuous year for the television and film industries – from the pandemic to racial reckonings to the never-ending “Is it a movie or is it TV?†debate – the Hollywood Foreign Press Association named its top creative picks from across the two mediums (and, you know, whatever’s in the Limited Series or TV Movie category).
