Tax Day isn’t usually much to celebrate — except this year, when it will, fittingly, mark ten days until the release of The Accountant 2. Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s action sequel hits theaters April 25 after a South by Southwest premiere on March 8. That’s nearly nine years after The Accountant first introduced us to Affleck’s accountant killer, Christian Wolff. “It was so frustrating,” Affleck told Vanity Fair about the production delays. The sequel reportedly finds Christian and his brother, Brax (played by Bernthal), teaming up to solve a murder. “I love Jon so much as an actor and as a guy,” Affleck said. “I have a real fondness that I thought would translate easily into this sort of brother relationship.” Love is certainly a funny word to use about the movie that (allegedly) distracted Affleck from his marriage to Jennifer Lopez. But really, would you rather stay married to your long-unrequited love or make an action flick with your buddy?
What non-CPA-approved work is Ben Affleck up to this time?
Affleck’s Christian Wolff is back to solve/avenge the murder of Ray King (J.K. Simmons), the Treasury official he worked with. Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) returns to hire him for the job. And this time, he’s teaming up with his brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal).
Is there a trailer?
The first trailer reintroduces us to Christian Wolff and his mission, set to Nine Inch Nails’s moody “Find My Way.” Ray King writes “Find the Accountant” on his arm before he’s killed, leading Marybeth Medina to … well, find Christian and reluctantly team up with him again. The trailer also shows more of the strained dynamic between Christian and his brother, Brax. “I spent years looking for you,” Bernthal’s Brax tells Christian outside his trailer. “Do you not miss me because of me, or is it because of your condition?” (Yes, remember: Affleck is once again playing an autistic character.) Oh, and there’s a lot of punching and shooting, of course.
When is The Accountant 2 out?
The film premieres in the heat of tax season, on March 8 at South by Southwest. But accountants everywhere will get to enjoy it in theaters beginning April 25. It’s an Amazon MGM Studios production, too, so you’ll likely find it on Prime Video later.
