Oh my Christ! James Corden and Ruth Jones, the creators and stars of the BBC One sitcom Gavin & Stacey, have announced that the classic series is set to return for one more go this Christmas. “Some news…it’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James,†Corden posted to Instagram, along with a photo of himself and Jones holding up the script, titled “the finale.â€
The hit U.K. series, which originally ran for three seasons from 2007 to 2010, followed an Essex boy and Welsh girl (Matthew Horne and Joanna Page in the title roles) embarking on a long-distance relationship that eventually blends their two eccentric families. Corden and Jones star as the title couple’s best friends, Smithy and Nessa, who end up developing a relationship of their own. The cast first reunited for a Christmas special in 2019, which garnered a whopping 18.49 million viewers — half of all the people watching television in the U.K. at the time. That special also ended in a cliffhanger regarding the status of Smithy and Nessa’s relationship, leaving the door open for this new, and apparently final, episode. The rom-com series also stars Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, and Melanie Walters, and is currently available to stream on Peacock in the Unites States.
