After Yellowstone season 5B ends, Beth Dutton and hubby Rip Wheeler are moving on to greener pastures: a spinoff. Here’s everything we know, including how the season 5B finale tees up this potential new show.
Wheeling and dealing
December 11, 2024: Deadline is reporting that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have just signed on to star in new series focusing on the couple. Other main cast members are suspected to also be making the jump to this new show. Maybe Beth and Rip’s really cool new friend Travis?
So if Beth and Rip and Kayce and Trav and other main Yellowstone characters are coming to the new series, and as Deadline says, the story from Yellowstone will probably also carry over to the new show, what exactly is different? Streaming rights! Yellowstone has a deal to stream on Peacock, while a new show could stream on Paramount+. This new show also wouldn’t exist under the specter of Kevin Costner and the drama of his exit from Yellowstone. It’s an ingenious scheme, one that could finally save the Dutton Ranch for good. Or at least for another few seasons of plot twists. Meanwhile, the season (series?) finale of Yellowstone prime airs December 15.
How does Yellowstone’s finale telegraph the spinoff?
December 15, 2024: Spoilers for the Yellowstone season 5 (and maybe series?) finale below.
In the possibly final episode of Yellowstone prime, Kayce Dutton sells the ranch to the Confederated Tribes of Broken Rock, on the conditions that 1) the land is never developed and 2) Kayce and his family can still live there on a small plot of land. That means Beth and Rip have to find a new place to rope and scheme and drink and whatnot.
Beth tells Rip about a small plot of land, where Rip can have a small stock of horses and beef cows. It’s quite remote, which prompts Beth to joke that Rip will have to build her a bar. Yes, this is just a cute lil quip, but maybe the spinoff could really be about Beth running a small cowboy bar? Beth’s Place à la Archie Bunker’s Place? Think about it, Taylor.
