The National 5 exam involves answering questions on artists and designers previously studied and also unseen works. Your answers need to show an understanding of how artists and designers are influenced and the elements and techniques they use.

The exam paper tests knowledge and understanding of:

  • art and design concepts
  • how social and cultural influences impact on the work and practice of artists and designers

Key exam information

  • There is one paper, worth 20% of the National 5 Art and Design course.
  • It is made up of 50 marks in total.
  • It has two sections:
    • Expressive art studies
    • Design studies
  • You must answer four questions out of twelve in total, answering two questions from each section:
The exam paper is divided into two parts: Expressive Art and Design. For each part there is one mandatory question and another you must choose from a selection of six questions.
  • The examiner can award one mark for each justified comment which is relevant to the question.
  • To gain full marks, you must answer all elements of each question.
