Types of chemical reactions - OCR GatewayReactions of acids
Oxidation is the gain of oxygen and reduction is the loss of oxygen. Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base. Acids react with metals, bases and carbonates to produce salts.
acidSubstance producing more hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions when dissolved in water. take part in reactions in which saltThe substance formed when the hydrogen ion in an acid is replaced by a metal ion. are produced. In these reactions, the hydrogen ionElectrically charged particle, formed when an atom or molecule gains or loses electrons. in the acids are replaced by metal ions or ammonium ions.
Reactions with metals
A salt and hydrogen are produced when acids react with metalShiny element that is a good conductor of electricity and heat, and which forms basic oxides.. In general:
Carbon dioxide is given off during the reaction between copper carbonate and hydrochloric acid. Describe the laboratory test for carbon dioxide.
Bubble the gas through limewaterCalcium hydroxide solution. It turns milky in the presence of carbon dioxide.. Carbon dioxide turns limewater milky or cloudy white.
Predicting the salt formed
The names of salts have two parts:
The first part comes from the metal, or the metal in the base or carbonate used. If ammonia or ammonium carbonate is used, the name starts with ‘ammonium’.
The second part comes from the acid used:
chloride from hydrochloric acid
nitrate from nitric acid
sulfate from sulfuric acid
phosphate from phosphoric acid
For example, copper(II) sulfate is made when copper oxide reacts with sulfuric acid.
Question
Name the salt formed when magnesium reacts with dilute nitric acid.
Magnesium nitrate.
Question
Name the salt formed when calcium carbonate reacts with dilute phosphoric acid.
Calcium phosphate.
Question
Name the salt formed when ammonia solution reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid.
