Understanding numbers

Place value describes the position of a digit in a number. It also gives the value of each digit in a number.
Hundred squares, number lines, bundles of straws and tens and ones blocks can be really helpful for understanding place value.
They can show you what a number looks like, how big or small it is and even how it compares to other numbers.
There are lots of number patterns in Maths. There are odd numbers, even numbers, multiples, single-digit and two-digit numbers.

Example 1

What is the value of the digit 4 in this number?
✓ The value of the digit 4 in the number 48 is 40.
There are 4 tens and 8 ones in 48.
Here is the number represented with tens and ones blocks.

Example 2

Can you work out the missing number?
✓ The missing number is 10.
26 = 10 + 10 + 6

Example 3

Here are two numbers. Which one is the smallest?
✓ 68 is the smallest.
When comparing numbers, you look at the number of tens first.
68 has 6 tens and 71 has 7 tens.
6 tens is smaller than 7 tens.
So 68 is smaller than 71.
