- 125g soft spread or butter
- 125g sugar (white or brown)
- 250g plain flour
- 1 egg
- A pinch of salt
- 250g icing sugar
- 2 tbsp cold water
- Food colouring
To make the biscuits
1. With the help of an adult, pre-heat the oven to 190C/ 375F/ Gas Mark 5.
2. Beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
3. Whisk the egg and slowly mix into the buttery sugar mixture.
4. Sift in the flour and mix to form a dough. You can use your hands to bring the mixture together. Then, knead the dough on a floured surface, to stop it sticking.
5. Roll out the dough to about 1cm thickness. Use cutters to cut the dough into shapes, or you could make a template to draw around.
6. Cover a baking tray with grease proof paper or baking parchment and place the dough shapes on tray.
7. Ask an adult to place in a pre-heated oven for 10-15 minutes. Once ready, place on a wire rack to cool.
To make the icing
1. Sift icing sugar into a large bowl.
2. Gradually add the water to check the consistency.
3. Once the icing sugar mix is thick and not too runny, it is ready. The mixture should be spreadable. If it is too runny add more icing sugar, if it's too thick add more water.
4. Divide the icing sugar into smaller bowls ready to be coloured. Add food colouring and mix.
5. Spread your base colour onto your shapes. To add detail you can use a cocktail stick or a fork or let the icing drip.
