Outdoor movies are one of the most civilized entertainments in our modern city, and the opportunities to enjoy them have been multiplying since Bryant Park pioneered the activity fifteen years ago (the Monday-night screenings have become so popular that unless you lay your blanket out hours before, you’ll never got a spot). If your schedule permits only one night of outdoor viewing this summer, make it the “Movies With a View” series in Dumbo’s Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, which will run for eight consecutive Thursday nights beginning July 5. It’s held on sloping, velvety hills beneath the glittering expanse of the Manhattan Bridge, with unfettered views of downtown serving as a backdrop to the giant screen. Further underscoring the event’s civility: There’s a free bicycle valet to ensure your ride is secure, and until the movie starts a D.J. spins a mellow opening set. BYO whatever (alcohol is, technically, disallowed), and there’s popcorn sold from old-timey vendor carts. The main feature is preceded by a short from an up-and-coming local filmmaker. This year’s lineup includes The Muppets Take Manhattan, The Princess Bride, All About Eve, Being John Malkovich, Hair, and—the obvious winner—West Side Story.
