It was a strong festival for first-time New York filmmakers, but Brooklyn’s Cary Joji Fukunaga made the most noise. His Sin Nombre, picked up by Focus, chases a young Mexican gangster running toward Texas and away from his angry crew. Shot on ramshackle trains and in a riot of locations, it’s a wildly ambitious debut, but the result is brash and stylish—a border-crossing tragedy with shades of Slumdog Millionaire.
