The owners of Indochine, Republic, Kittichai, and BondSt have taken over the space at Hudson and West 11th Streets that for years housed the Hudson Corner Cafe. The old café, which closed last summer, was a low-key neighborhood joint. The as-yet-unnamed new venture, scheduled for a fall opening, will likely be a “British-style chophouse and oyster joint,” says Michael Callahan, one of the owners. “We’re very close to a deal with a chef who is well known in London.” It’s another step in the neighborhood’s super-gentrification. “The upscaling of the West Village in recent years has been incredibly dramatic,” laments Andrew Berman, director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. “I will reserve judgment until it opens, but it’s indicative of a bigger trend.” Callahan sees no need to worry. “It is our intention to maintain the character of the neighborhood,” he says.
