Backstory: Majorcan farm boy hits London and finds gig with Alexander McQueen! Sound familiar? But this time it’s not Miguel Adrover . . .
The Look: Unlike Adrover, with whom he once worked, Pons has a knack for the sellable (free-flowing dresses with a “goddess”—not “burka”—vibe. Plus, no goats).
Derek Lam
Backstory: After working for Michael Kors, Lam debuted his line last September, and fashion editors everywhere kicked themselves for skipping the most promising event of the week. This year, expect a mob scene.
The Look: His last collection exemplified this spring’s aesthetic (“pretty”) with floral prom dresses. His new one, described by an insider as “still girlish but not as lady,” is full of rich colors, like deep pumpkin plus shots of metallics.
Jeffrey Chow
Backstory: Originally from Hong Kong, Chow studied at Central St. Martin’s in London (glamorous alma mater of McQueen, McCartney, etc.), and put in time at Perry Ellis and Pucci.
The Look: Sharp black suiting, yanked into new shapes. (Who says you need two sleeves?) Inspired, says Chow, by “the Chinese thirties.”
Andrew Harmon
Backstory: A sculptor, Harmon apprenticed at crunchy Susan Cianciolo’s Run Studio and with Betsey Johnson and Miguel Adrover.
The Look: Severe, broad-shouldered suiting, with narrow waists and full legs. “This season,” he says, “I’m looking at the films of a German director called Fassbinder. Have you heard of him?” (We have. Thanks.)
