Cameo: Return of the Wounded Warrior, Part II

What is Patrick Ewing’s sense of his place in history? What legacy does the Big Man imagine he will offer the ever-hungry mythmakers of the city game? These are the questions dogging the struggling-to-stay-interested Knicks fan as Ewing announces, again, that he’ll resume his rightful place as the team’s entire offense during the playoffs. (Though their ability to make it that far, and thereby interrupt the Ringling Bros. schedule, is far from certain.) Does the aloof superstar secretly harbor a scratchy tape of Willis Reed – nearly crippled by injured knees – leading his team to victory in the halcyon days of Knicks glory? To borrow a phrase, we knew Willis Reed, and Pat, you’re no Willis Reed. What are you coming back for? A few gutty, hard-fought games in a three-and-out first-round massacre? Send in the clowns.
