Transit Check

Street Closures
(1) West 31st Street to West 33rd Street from Sixth to Ninth avenues will allow only restricted vehicle access, with 24-hour security checkpoints set up around the Madison Square Garden zone.

(2) Between Seventh and Ninth avenues, pedestrians will need to prove a business-related purpose to enter.

(3) West 32nd Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues will be for pedestrians only, 24 hours a day, and serves as the primary route to Penn Station’s Seventh Avenue entrance.

(4) Seventh Avenue will be closed from 29th Street to 42nd Street while the convention is in session. (August 30 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., and August 31 to September 2 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.)

(5) Eighth Avenue will be closed during convention hours from 23rd to 34th streets.

(6) Thirty-first Street at Eighth Avenue is a designated protest area; additional lane or avenue closures are likely south of that point at other times during the week.

(7) The only ways into Penn Station will be via the main entrance, on Seventh Avenue at 32nd Street, or via the Long Island Rail Road entrance on 34th Street just west of Seventh Avenue. The Eighth Avenue entrances will be closed for the duration of the convention.

Additional street closures are possible depending on the status of the United for Peace and Justice rally, slated for Sunday, August 29. If the march occurs at its city-approved location (and not, as the city has prohibited, in Central Park), the West Side Highway will be closed from Chambers to 34th streets, Seventh Avenue will be closed down to 14th Street, and 34th Street will be closed from Seventh to Twelfth Avenue.

Buses
(8) The MTA will reroute the M16, M20, and M34 lines on Seventh and Eighth avenues and on 34th Street. Buses on Ninth and Tenth avenues will be slow and crowded.

Subways
Subways will operate as usual, according to the mayor’s office, but try to avoid stops around West 34th Street.

Taxis
(9) Penn Station’s main taxi stand, normally located on Seventh Avenue in front of the Madison Square Garden marquee, will be moved to 32nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway. The Eighth Avenue stand will be eliminated.

Amtrak
From August 30 through September 2, Amtrak riders must have reservations prior to buying tickets to most destinations.

NJ Transit
Midtown Direct trains on the Montclair-Boonton and Morris and Essex lines will operate to and from Hoboken instead of Penn Station. Use of overhead luggage racks will be prohibited; some train restrooms will be closed and trash cans sealed. Monthlong rail passes for August will be honored until September 7.
