People always ask me where to get cool sheets. And it’s not because there’s a shortage of fabulous bed linens, it’s because while they know the major brands—Calvin, Frette, Anichini—they really want stuff that nobody else has.
Archipelago (38 Walker Street; 212-334-9460 or archipelagoinc.com), a cool Tribeca bedding store that opened in April (the company’s thirteen years old, but this is its first store), has what they want. The 2,300-square-foot loftlike shop showcases seven dreamy beds, dressed to show a range of styles. The look is modern, but not too groovy—mostly subdued patterns in rich, beautiful colors (stripes, tone-on-tone polka dots, and so on). There are more than 150 fabrics (from Thai silks to washable Ultrasuede), plus table linens, robes, and throw pillows. Everything’s designed for layering. You don’t think you need a duvet and a coverlet? The displays might make you reconsider. Archipelago also makes house calls to survey and suggest ($250).
Most linens are custom-made in four to six weeks. Prices start at $30 for six napkins; bed linens are from $105 for a pillowcase to $2,200 for a silk duvet cover.
