I have learned a few things about linen, having bought it somewhat compulsively over the past several years. For a drapey, Black Crane–esque vibe, there’s vintage Flax by Jeanne Engelhart, an ’80s-era brand that you can find for under $50 on Poshmark. Uniqlo’s linen-cotton blend is the softest. Muji makes very easy-breezy “directional” dresses, many of which I wore during (and soon after) my two pregnancies. And, as I learned earlier this summer, Target’s house brand A New Day makes a surprisingly nice basic linen tank dress. I chose the black-and-white floral pattern because it felt a little reminiscent of Marimekko’s “Unikko” flowers. It’s got a flattering, somewhat high neckline, hits nicely just below the knee, and, most important, has pockets. I wear it around the house, to the beach, to the playground, and, with the right shoes and a red lip, out to dinner. I ordered it in black, too, and while it’s much more versatile (I can wear it several days in a row without anyone noticing), after multiple washes it’s just not as soft as my floral one.
In any event, it’s a great $20 dress, and we spotted it on sale at Target’s non–Prime Day sale, also known as Deal Days, so it’s a mere $10 till Wednesday.
