Lake-effect snow: what is it?

Most common in the winter around the Great Lakes in the US and Canada, lake-effect snow can cause large though fairly localised amounts of snowfall and huge disruption.

The village of Copenhagen in New York State saw nearly 5ft (1.5m) of snow in 72 hours over the 2024 Thanksgiving weekend.
