Soundtrack for New Bob Dylan Movie Is Totally Dylanesque

Details for the soundtrack to Todd Haynes’s upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, I’m Not There, have been announced, and — marred only by one probable stinker (Jack Johnson’s take on “Mama You’ve Been on My Mindâ€) — it looks pretty incredible. Jeff Tweedy, Sonic Youth, and the Hold Steady all turn in sure-to-be-exceptional versions of classic Dylan tracks. Seriously, we’ve not seen this many indie-rock luminaries in one place since the beer tent at Coachella.

The full track list is here, and after the jump we highlight some of the ones we’re most excited about.

Stephen Malkmus & The Million Dollar Bashers, “Ballad of a Thin Manâ€
We’ve have no idea who the Million Dollar Bashers are, but we can’t wait to hear Malkmus wrap his deadpan around lyrics about midgets and lumberjacks.

The Hold Steady, “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Windowâ€
Everyone’s favorite drinking buddies attacking Dylan’s best-ever rewrite of “Like a Rolling Stone Awesome!

Jeff Tweedy, “Simple Twist of Fateâ€
Tweedy sounds great singing anything, but we’d imagine that his ragged baritone is particularly well suited for Blood on the Tracks’ emotional centerpiece.

Tom Verlaine & The Million Dollar Bashers, “Cold Irons Boundâ€
The original Time Out of Mind version already has squiggly guitars and jagged rhythms, so we don’t know what else the Television front man can add to it — but we’re pretty sure he’ll think of something.

Cat Power, “Stuck Inside of Mobile With Memphis Blues Againâ€
The lyrics to this Blonde on Blonde track make about as much sense as the average Chan Marshall interview, so we’re guessing this will be a good match.
