Catcher in the Rye–authoring recluse J.D. Salinger has passed away in Cornish, New Hampshire, at 91, according to his literary representative. “Despite having broken his hip in May, his health had been excellent until a rather sudden decline after the new year,†says a spokesperson for Harold Ober Associates. “He was not in any pain before or at the time of his death.†Apart from Catcher, Salinger’s only other major works are Franny and Zooey, Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction, and the short-story collection Nine Stories. The last time he published anything (a novella, Hapworth 16, 1924, in The New Yorker) was in June of 1965, so one wonders what might be hiding in his desk.
