Our national love affair with Betty White is only getting more torrid. After giving Saturday Night Live its highest-rated episode in eighteen months, she has now given TV land its highest-rated program ever. An impressive 5 million people watched the 10 p.m. broadcast of her new sitcom, Hot in Cleveland, last night, by far the most people ever to watch a show on that network, and — to put it in perspective — about 2 to 3 million more people than tuned in for an average episode of ABC’s Better Off Ted. Seems safe to say that, yes, it is illegal to criticize Betty White.
