Eat, Pray, Love Gets Rid of R Rating by Changing Absolutely Nothing

Earlier this month the Classification and Rating Appeals Board slapped the movie adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love, starring Julia Roberts, with an unexpected R rating for “brief strong language.†The studio, Columbia, had hoped for a PG-13 instead, and decided to take action — by changing nothing about the film. It filed an appeal and had director (and Glee creator) Ryan Murphy politely ask the ratings board to please change its mind. It did. Eat, Pray, Love is now a PG-13 movie, because sometimes the only difference between an R movie and a PG-13 movie is the day of the week that rating was assigned. At least now 15-year-old girls will be able to watch “brief strong language, some sexual references and male rear nudity,†plus Julia Roberts finding herself, without being accompanied by an adult.
