In line with pre-release tracking, Knight and Day (featuring Tom Cruise’s divisive face) underperformed in its first day of release, earning just $3.8 million Wednesday in 3,043 theaters. Though Fox downplayed the opening as not necessarily indicative of what the film will take in this weekend, it’s worth noting that last year’s Public Enemies (similarly geared toward an adult audience) opened with $8.2 million on a Wednesday, and went on to earn a disappointing $25.3 million in its first weekend. So Shia LaBeouf should be getting a phone call any minute now. [Variety]
