Industry Roundup: Sean Penn, Graham

What’s Up, Doc: Sean Penn is in negotiations to produce - and potentially star - in a film based on surfing legend Dorian “Doc†Paskowitz. Paskowitz, who is now 89, achieved “cult hero†status for ditching his successful medical practice and heading out on the road in a camper with his wife and nine children, eventually founding the first surf camp in the continental U.S. Promisingly for this project, things worked out pretty well the last time Penn played a surfer dude. Aunt Heather: Heather Graham has joined the family film Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, based on the children’s book about the adventures of a third-grader. Graham will play “zany†Aunt Opal, a “globe-trotting, somewhat nutty personality†who babysits Judy and her brother (charmingly named Stink) for the summer. Hopefully the kids won’t inadvertently flip to The Hangover on TV. [Variety]

Three More For Scream: Adam Brody, Marley Shelton and Erik Knudsen have joined the cast of Scream 4, which is bringing back original cast members Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox while incorporating newcomers Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin and Nico Tortorella. Brody will play a cop recently graduated from college, Shelton will play a deputy who knew Campbell’s character in high school, and Knudsen will play a character “familiar with horror movie conventions†who provides comic relief - the Hurley of the movie, if you will. Reimagining: Brian Wilson’s album of completed tracks left behind unfinished by George Gershwin - called, straight-forwardly, Brian Wilson Reimagines George Gershwin - will be released August 17. The record includes two songs Wilson “built†from Gershwin’s unfinished music, while the rest of the album is filled with the Beach Boy’s take on classic Gershwin compositions. “This is the most spiritual project I’ve ever worked on,†Wilson said. Maving Waves: Cali punk band Wavves will be spending the next two months touring Europe and North America supporting their album King of the Beach, out August 3. They’ll start in Europe, playing in Cologne, Germany on July 15, with things wrapping up August 31 in Visalia, California. The album’s out on iTunes Thursday, by the way, essentially rendering that August 3 date meaningless. [Pitchfork]

Justice Served
: Stephen Bishop will play former Atlanta Braves star David Justice in Moneyball, the adaptation of Michael Lewis’ 2003 book about Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane’s shrewd development of a successful team. Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman are on board. And… Bishop does sort of look like him! [HR]
