Proving that there is nothing worse than making people who live in Brentwood drive east, the Independent Spirit Awards are moving back to the Santa Monica beach for the 2011 ceremony, Film Independent announced today. Once heralded as a fun, Saturday-afternoon excursion the day before the Oscars, the Indie Spirits had become an increasingly high-pressure stop on the awards gauntlet, a change underlined by last year’s relocation to downtown Los Angeles’ cavernous L.A. Live complex. By moving the ceremony back to the beach, organizers hope to turn back the clock (literally, since last year’s nighttime show began airing on the East Coast at 11p.m.) in a bid to recapture “the true indie spirit of the Awards,” said Jennifer Caserta, executive vice-president and general manager of IFC.
