Making Jokes About Peru May Not Be Worth the Hassle

“Entertainment is an agreeable occupation of the mind, and shall be sane whereas discrimination and prejudice are not a part of it. At the same time, entertainment is culture and education. Absolutely no one has the right to generalize and denigrate a whole nation or any community through this type of comments, clearly leading to mockery. We must teach our children and realize ourselves that this said ’jokingly’ behavior, denigrating a nation for us to laugh at and to amuse us is NO joke specially since killing is NO joke. There are many events around the world that we all yet have to deal with, but none is less important at the time on defending the image and environment of a whole nation and their citizens.â€

A couple of weeks ago on Modern Family, Gloria made a little joke about Peru. She says, “Ah, here we go. Because, in Colombia, we trip over goats and we kill people in the street. Do you know how offensive that is? Like we’re Peruvians!†Not too bad, right? No more offensive than the piles of Columbia jokes that have been made episode after episode, at least. But “philanthropist Rodolfo de Rothschild†is not amused! And he has written a lengthy, nonsensical press release so everyone knows just how not amused he is! Here’s a quote from the man himself:He may have a point? Or he may not? I’ll be honest, I don’t really understand what the hell he’s saying here.
