When Harold Camping predicted Judgment Day this weekend, he had the whole world listening (if skeptically). In Take Shelter, Michael Shannon is having no such luck; he’s plagued with eerie visions of an impending doomsday, but he can’t convince his friends, his loving wife (Jessica Chastain) — or at times, even himself — that he isn’t simply losing his mind. Shannon’s tightly coiled performance was one of the standouts at Sundance this year, and at Cannes the movie won the Grand Prize in the Critics Week competition. Shannon’s visions may not be pleasant, but we can confidently predict rapturous notices (and maybe even award consideration) when the movie comes out this October.
