Maya Rudolph says she’s not doing an Oprah impression as her Ava character on Up All Night. And she really, really means it! In fact, she denies it six times in six different ways in one interview. Not even as a “jumping off point?†the reporter asks. “No,†she says. “I think everyone wants me to say yes, but she is a made-up character … Maybe I’m the wrong person to interview about this,†she tells the Chicago Tribune. “I’m getting the impression that you want to do an article on my character being like Oprah.†Okay, okay, Maya, we’ll grant the premise: You’re not channeling Oprah. (And in fairness, she’s not: Ava so far has been spacey and selfish, which aren’t really Oprah traits.) The problem is that Up All Night still isn’t sure what exactly it is channeling — workplace satire? 30 Rock–style zaniness? Modern Family–style ensemble piece? Something more naturalistic than that? Up is still new, and it has time to figure it all out.
