Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh died Saturday in Chicago of an apparent drug overdose. Welsh, 40, was found unresponsive in his hotel Saturday afternoon, and police say they found prescription drugs and a baggie of what appears to be heroin in the room. Welsh joined Weezer in 1998, replacing Matt Sharp, and played with the band on The Green Album; he left the group in 2001 following a suicide attempt and drug overdose, and more recently had become a visual artist and painter. Welsh was in Chicago to see his former band at Riotfest, and weirdly had tweeted that he “dreamt [he] died in chicago next weekend.” Weezer played their show last night as planned and said in a message on their site that “as sad as it is to think about, we know Mikey would never want the rock stopped on his account — quite the contrary in fact.” [Chicago Tribune]
