X-Men director Bryan Singer attached himself to a movie version of the classic “Jack and the Beanstalk†story back in 2009, though for a while there, it seemed like Singer was interested in leaping from his beanstalk onto another project: He was close to coming onboard Fox’s X-Men: First Class as a director until Warner Bros. and New Line insisted he stay put. Perhaps it was for the best that Singer stuck with Jack the Giant Killer, though, as big-screen fairy tales have become big business since, with every producer in Hollywood trying to chase the runaway blockbuster success of Tim Burton’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland. Still, Singer’s magic-beans movie had kept an awfully low profile for a summer 2012 tentpole until today, when a new trailer for Jack (toplined by First Class co-star Nicholas Hoult) debuted online, selling the movie’s big scope and even bigger magic vine. Take note, though: The largest, looming shadow cast on humble Jack isn’t that of the giant in the movie but of the giant would-be blockbuster opening two weeks before it, fellow fairy tale Snow White and the Huntsman.
