After Alice in Wonderland became Tim Burton’s highest-grossing film ever, it was inevitable that the director would return to the land of cinematic fairy tales, but for what project? Burton was briefly attached to Maleficent, a revisionist take on Sleeping Beauty to star Angelina Jolie as the villainous protagonist, but he eventually left the project and was replaced by fledgling director Robert Stromberg. Now the Hollywood Reporter brings word that Burton is in talks to direct a live-action Pinocchio movie scripted by Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller, and Warner Bros. is courting Robert Downey Jr. to star as Geppetto. Since competitive fairy tale projects are all the rage right now, this would be a great moment for Guillermo del Toro to suddenly push ahead with his long-planned Pinocchio movie, too …
