Earlier this week, ABC’s Southern soap GCB, full of Texas beauty queens and crucifixes, premiered to really quite respectable ratings. But long-shot Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich is betting that Mississippi voters aren’t among the show’s early fans. At a rally yesterday, he pinpointed GCB as an example of how the “elite media†and the “entertainment industry†are anti-Christian and pro-Islam. “Come again?†you say. His point was this: “Take the exact name [the show is based on the novel Good Christian Bitches], drop out Christian and put in Muslim, and ask yourself, is there any network that would have dared to run a show like that and you know the answer is not a one.†Then again, it’s not like Muslims haven’t been called much worse names in recent years.
