And the first NBC freshman series to get renewed for next season is … not Smash! Nope, Peacock brass have instead decided to honor Friday night creepfest Grimm, ordering a second season of the modestly rated supernatural procedural. NBC confirmed the news after Grimm scribe Akela Cooper tweeted the pick-up to followers Friday morning. One reason for the early Grimm pickup: NBC will likely launch some of its fall schedule early next season, in order to take advantage of its big Olympics platform. Giving the greenlight now means the network will have episodes ready to go in August. Deadline is reporting that other NBC series may be in the process of getting greenlights for next fall, but a network spokesman says that Grimm is the only show with a renewal “for now.†We’re pretty darn certain that the better-rated Smash will get that second season now, however; the only question is whether NBC opts to keep season two to thirteen episodes or decides to expand the show’s order. The Voice is also a given for a third cycle, with NBC strongly considering running a fourth cycle next season as well.
