Before Gary Ross signed on to write and direct the upcoming, highly anticipated feature film version of The Hunger Games, he was trying to make Venom, a Spider-Man spinoff, for Sony. Now the studio has begun negotiations with another of 2012’s most successful directors for the job: Josh Trank, who helmed Chronicle. That movie’s primary character was an antihero with superpowers, which makes Trank a fitting choice for Venom, since the inky comic-book mainstay was originally conceived as a villain (and was featured in Spider-Man 3). Here, he’ll be a little more sympathetic, though you still wouldn’t ask him to sit down on your nice couch. (Too messy!)
