Universal is getting back into some mummy business. Variety reports that the studio has hired Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts to draft a reboot of The Mummy, one of the studio’s most storied franchises. It’s been four years since the last installment — 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, starring Brendan Fraser — but Spaihts says he’s ready to take things in a new direction. “I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with Prometheus: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material, and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before,†the screenwriter told Variety. We applaud that approach.
