When we caught up with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello on Saturday at the Night of Too Many Stars benefit, we had to ask: Did he happen to catch the vice-presidential debate the other night? Of course! “My buddy Paul Ryan was up there, and you could tell he was all jacked up on his P90X from listening to Rage Against the Machine, which might have given him a boost,†laughed Morello, who famously penned a Rolling Stone op-ed denouncing Ryan after the veep candidate revealed that Rage was his favorite band. “The strength of a band like Rage Against the Machine is that the music is compelling to people who don’t necessarily share the political views of the band,†Morello told us, adding, “He was already the same jackass he was before he started listening to Rage Against the Machine as he is now.†Could Morello recommend some other music that might dovetail better with Ryan’s political philosophy, then? “If there’s a song called ‘We are the one percent, and we’ve come to rob you blind with our corporate friends with our foot on your neck’ … that’s a pretty catchy chorus, don’t you think?†said Morello. “Yeah, it would make a pretty good hook.â€
