Boom! NBC announced today that the network has hired Downton Abbey overlord Julian Fellowes to create a Downton-esque drama about the moguls and mavens of late-nineteenth-century New York City. Dubbed The Gilded Age, the show will be, per NBC, “an epic tale of the princes of the American Renaissance, and the vast fortunes they made — and spent.†In a press release, Fellowes said the show will be set in “a vivid time†in American history, a period “with dizzying, brilliant ascents and calamitous falls, of record-breaking ostentation and savage rivalry; a time when money was king.†No word on when the project will hit the air; technically, it doesn’t appear as if NBC has ordered it to series just yet. But fear not, Downton fans: Fellowes will continue with that show, which was just renewed for a fourth season, as he begins work on his new production deal with Universal Television.
