It’s certainly been a week for dystopian sci-fi trailers. First Tom Cruise’s Oblivion, then M. Night Shyamalan’s Will/Jaden Smith–starring After Earth, and now we get a glimpse at Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. There’s an interdimensional portal in the sea, and the monsters that come out of it (Kaiju) appear AWESOME, like things that would laugh at Godzilla, call him cute, and tell him not to quit his day job. In this brief look, Pacific Rim seems like one of the rare times a CGI-fiesta may be reasonably convincing and engrossing. Idris Elba, who gets a rousing monologue here (“today we are canceling the apocalypse!â€), co-stars with Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, and Ron Perlman. They pilot big robots called Jaegers.
