‘The Office’s Dwight Spin-off Is Confirmed to Air This Season as an Episode of ‘The Office’

A couple months ago, Rainn Wilson announced that NBC wasn’t moving ahead with The Farm, the spin-off of The Office based around his character Dwight Schrute and his wacky family’s wacky beet farm. The pilot for The Farm was film as a regular episode of The Office, and we reported that the episode would be still be airing later this season, despite NBC’s decision not to pick up the show.  Now, Office head honcho Greg Daniels officially confirms this info to TV Line, referring to the nixed spin-off as “a very good episode†and saying, “We’re not going to air exactly what it was, because it has certain aspects that were appropriate for a pilot of a new show. We’re going to shoot a little additional material to make it fit into the season more.†The original plan was for Dwight to leave The Office midway through the season if the pilot moved forward, so the changes to the episode will probably be to make it seem a little more Office-y and a little less spin-off-y. The Office only has 13 episodes left before it ends its impressive nine-season run in May, and it’s pretty cool that one of these episodes will be a glimpse at what a Schrute Family show would have looked like. Wouldn’t it have been nice if Joey had just been a weird episode of Friends and not a real thing that was on the air for two years?
