Only time will tell if Lena Dunham’s Hannah is a voice of a generation, but we can know right now if she’s the voice of a neighborhood. The show is largely shot in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn, home to a lot of hip young folk and many more less-young Polish folk. (It’s also the home of both Vulture correspondent Jesse David Fox and Vulture video producer Sarah Frank.) We hit the streets to speak with people at and around the real Cafe Grumpy (Hannah’s TV workplace) as well as her real fictional apartment to get to the bottom of the Girls effect. We also encounter an older resident who would be much more excited if Jim Parsons shot on his front step.
