It’s been eleven years since Gangs of New York — why not reframe it as a TV show? A new series adaptation being developed by Martin Scorsese and Miramax will aim beyond NYC, also depicting the 1800s gang lore of cities like Chicago and New Orleans. “This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film,†Scorsese says. “A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.†We’ll miss DiCaprio and Bill the Butcher, but it doesn’t sound like the shabbiest idea.
