In 2006, New York Magazine named Marisha Pessl’s debut novel, Special Topics in Calamity Physics, one of its top ten books of the year. (The New York Times also included it on its list, but, you know, respect to our mother publication.) Seven years later, Pessl is set to release her follow-up, Night Film, which is described as “a psychological literary thriller in which an investigative journalist sets out to discover the truth behind the apparent suicide of Ashley Cordova, daughter of a reclusive, cult-horror film director who hasn’t been seen in public in over 30 years.†Journalist, okay, suicide, okay — wait, there’s a “cult-horror film director†in this thing? That just put us over the top. Night Film will be out on August 20.
