As we saw with the first trailer for Iron Man 3, gone this time around is Tony Stark’s fun-loving, quipster persona. Now he’s depressed and out for revenge. It’s part of what Marvel is calling their Phase Two, which involves both expanding the universe and deepening the characters. As seems to be the case with comic-book movies, deepening means darkening, both emotionally and literally — this trailer is packed with all the shadows. The movie comes out on May 3, giving us two months to prepare for a dark Iron Man. Though, to be fair, Robert Downey Jr. is still there, there’s a badass army of iron men, and Ben Kingsley’s voice as the Mandarin is pretty funny, so we shouldn’t worry too much.
