American Idol is a disaster this season. Ratings are down 25 percent from last year, and each week the show seems a little duller and slower — and with The Voice doing well at NBC, Idol can’t afford to be so listless. What’s the onetime ratings king to do? Fire everyone, probably. According to the Wrap, none of the judges from this season will be back next year, and neither will the show’s longtime executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. That’s still just a rumor at this point, but it is hard to picture Fox willingly shelling out for Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, and Randy Jackson to come back when that lineup seems to be such a turn-off to viewers. It’s not clear yet who the new judges would be nor is it clear that the judges are indeed the actual problem, rather than a general culturewide onset of Idol fatigue.
