The sequel to Universal’s 2010 animated megahit did even better than its predecessor, topping the long holiday weekend box office with a $81 million debut. On the other end of the opening weekend spectrum, Disney’s long-troubled, massively expensive The Lone Ranger brought in a mere $28.9 million, perhaps proving that Hollywood needs to come up with a new blockbuster formula. For its second weekend, female-buddy comedy The Heat came in third at the box office with $24.8 million, bringing its domestic cumulative total to $86.3 million. With a new cartoon on the marquee, last weekend’s winner, Monsters University, slipped to fourth place with $19.1 million, putting its domestic cumulative total at $215.6 million. Finally, World War Z took fifth place at the box office with $17.8 million in weekend earnings for a domestic cumulative total of $158.3 million.
