Despite the openings of two new movies this weekend, last week’s box-office frontrunner, Despicable Me 2, held on to first place, earning $44.8 million and bringing its domestic total to $229.2 million (and $472.4 million worldwide). Adam Sandler’s latest ensemble comedy, Grown Ups 2, came in at a close second place with $42.5 in earnings. Meanwhile, the North American debut of Guillermo del Toro’s $190 million Pacific Rim resulted in a disappointing $38.3 million. The Heat and The Lone Ranger rounded out the top five, earning $13.4 million and $10.4 million, respectively. (Their respective cumulative totals are now $111.7 million and $70.5 million.) And there’s some good news for Disney: Even though The Lone Ranger is flopping, Deadline reports that the studio was the first to reach $1 billion at the domestic box office this year.
