Bill Murray has found his next movie. Here’s how Deadline describes the plot of said film, which is called Rock the Casbah:
The story of a burned-out music manager who goes to Afghanistan on the USO tour with his last remaining client. When he finds himself abandoned, penniless and without his passport, he discovers a young girl with an extraordinary voice, who stows away with him back to Kabul to compete on the popular television show, The Afghan Star, Afghanistan’s equivalent of American Idol.
Rock the Casbah was written by Mitch Glazer, an old buddy of Murray’s who used to be writing partners with SNL’s original head writer Michael O’Donoghue. Glazer, the creator of Starz’s recently-canceled Magic City, co-wrote the 1988 Murray vehicle Scrooged and wrote and directed the 2010 movie Passion Play, which Murray starred in alongside Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox. Rock the Casbah will be directed by Barry Levinson, veteran director of movies like Rain Man and Wag the Dog who recently helmed the horror movie The Bay and the Al Pacino/Jack Kevorkian HBO film You Don’t Know Jack, for which he was nominated for two Emmys. If the project makes it into production, this will be Murray and Levinson’s first time working together.
