For the past few years, Seth Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg have been working on a raunchy animated comedy called Sausage Party, and Sony Pictures announced today that the project is moving forward. Sausage Party stars Rogen as the voice of a sausage who falls out of his shopping cart in the supermarket and goes on a quest, with his new friends, to get back to the shelf for the store’s 4th of July sale. Conrad Vernon (Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek 2) is directing the movie. Rogen and Goldberg are writing it alongside Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, two friends of theirs from Canada they brought to LA to work on movies. Rogen and Goldberg are producing the movie alongside Jonah Hill, who came up with the idea with them. Goldberg first mentioned the project in 2010 and said Jonah Hill would voice a main character alongside Rogen and that Kung Fu Panda director Mark Osborne is involved in some capacity, but today’s press release doesn’t mention Hill voicing a character or Osborne being involved. The movie is eyeing a 2015 release.
“It’s a rated-R, super dirty, mockery of a Pixar movie about sausages in a supermarket that need to get back to their aisle before the fourth of July,†Rogen told reporters a couple years ago. “We’re very passionate about it. Sausage Party is very special to us.â€
