This is an immaculate trailer — let’s just get that out of the way. True Detective looks hypnotically shot, blessed by surefire chemistry between real life besties Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and in possession of a story that appears sure-footed and compelling. “It wasn’t about looking to do TV — it was just looking at the material and going, ‘Wow,’†McConaughey explained to Vulture at Sundance in January. “I mean, this thing’s got fangs.†As for that catchy line in the trailer — “the world needs bad men; we keep the other bad men from the door†— sure, why not. Walter White’s leaving the air soon, and Don Draper will be gone within a year’s time. Step up, antiheroes, if even for a limited series. (Season one is set at eight episodes — all directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre) — and future seasons will operate American Horror Story–style, with a similar design but different stories and characters.
