HBO’s True Detective Trailer: McConaughey and Harrelson Do the Antihero Cop Thing

This is an immaculate trailer — let’s just get that out of the way. True Detective looks hypnotically shot, blessed by surefire chemistry between real life besties Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and in possession of a story that appears sure-footed and compelling. “It wasn’t about looking to do TV — it was just looking at the material and going, ‘Wow,’” McConaughey explained to Vulture at Sundance in January. “I mean, this thing’s got fangs.” As for that catchy line in the trailer — “the world needs bad men; we keep the other bad men from the door” — sure, why not. Walter White’s leaving the air soon, and Don Draper will be gone within a year’s time. Step up, antiheroes, if even for a limited series. (Season one is set at eight episodes — all directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre) — and future seasons will operate American Horror Story–style, with a similar design but different stories and characters.
