Remember Rebecca Black? Of course you do. Nearly three years ago, the then 13-year-old became an Internet sensation with the video for “Friday,†an awful, weirdly hypnotic song about tween “partyin’ partyinâ€â€ and “fun fun fun fun†made for $4,000 by vanity label Ark Music Factory. Over 100 million YouTube views, some death threats, and numerous covers later, Black is older and a little wiser, as she demonstrated today with the release of her new song and video, “Saturday.â€
It’s actually not bad! “Saturday†is catchy in a bland way, and it was definitely shot by someone much more talented (or better compensated) than the dudes over at Ark. (It also features an appearance by Black’s fellow viral star, Dave Days.) As the title suggests, the song is about the day after Friday. We don’t want to give too much away, but it seems that the weekend night Black was so excited about back in 2011 got a little “hazy†and “too crazy†— but you know she’ll “do it all again.†The video contains references to her previous work (a bowl of cereal, a convertible), as well as nods to more contemporary topics: At one point, a girl dressed as “Wrecking Ball†Miley Cyrus twerks in a crowd of solo cup-wielding young people. We’d like to think it’s Benni Cinkle.
