The Sundance Film Festival just announced its 2014 lineup, with a lot of movies starring well-known comedic actors like Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Aubrey Plaza, Lena Dunham, Jenny Slate, David Cross, and Amy Sedaris competing at the festival next month. Most of the movies debuting at Sundance will be released at some point in 2014, so this is actually a pretty solid preview of all the independent movies coming out next year. The Skeleton Twins — Directed by Craig Johnson, written by Johnson and Mark Heyman. A drama that follows an estranged brother and sister who coincidentally cheat death on the same day, which inspires them to re-examine their lives. Cast: Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell, Boyd Holbrook, Joanna Gleason.
Obvious Child — Directed and written by Gillian Robespierre. A Brooklyn standup gets dumped, fired, and pregnant, all right before Valentine’s Day. Cast: Jenny Slate, Jake Lacy, Gaby Hoffmann, David Cross, Gabe Liedman, Richard Kind.
Life After Beth — Directed and written by Jeff Baena. A man’s girlfriend dies unexpectedly but returns mysteriously afterwards. Cast: Aubrey Plaza, Dave DeHaan, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, Alia Shawkat, Paul Reiser.
Happy Christmas — Directed and written by Joe Swanberg. After a breakup, a young woman moves in with her older brother, his wife, and their son. Cast: Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Lena Dunham, Swanberg.
Ping Pong Summer — Directed and written by Michael Tully. Set in Ocean City, Maryland, Ping Pong Summer follows a ping pong-obsessed teenage boy on a family vacation in the summer of 1985. Cast: Susan Sarandon, John Hannah, Lea Thompson, Amy Sedaris, Robert Longstreet, Marcello Conte.
